While I was driving across the Narrows Bridge this Christmas Eve, I was thinking about my experiences this last year and those of my friends. Most everyone has felt this was a different Christmas than most and were having a hard time this season. As I thought about that and listened to Christmas music on the radio, I realized that there have been much harder Christmases that this one.
What came to mind were the hardships endured the Continental Army under the leadership of George Washington in Valley Forge in December of 1776. The men were malnourished, were inadequately clothed and life was harder than we can imagine.
Yet, they endured. To me, the crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton, which changed the tenor of the Revolutionary War was nothing short of a miracle. Because of these men, these brave men, our country was able to come into being. They enabled us to have the incredible lives we are able to live in these United States.
Despite the hard things that we are going through in our nation right now, I am remembering my forefathers and their determination to suffer through all they did. I am grateful for them and grateful for the love our Creator has for us to grant the miracles necessary for a new nation to come into being. We have much to be grateful for and much to do to make this nation what it was destined to be.
I crossed the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, not the Delaware and my challenges this last year were far from hardships endured by others. But I feel a part of what they lived through and pray this great Nation of ours can heals its wounds to stay the greatest nation on earth.

Here are the recipes you wanted for your first Thanksgiving Dinner, which, of course, you will make by yourself while everyone else is watching the games and having fun, leaving you alone in the kitchen, but they wil occasionally come into the kitchen to see where the appetizers are, which you are also making. Cornbread…

Love is always a risk. Many believe it is not worth it. They’re wrong. Alfred Lord Tennyson said that, “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” He was right. Any time that we give love, we introduce new positive energy into the Universe through that love. We do…

If anyone had told me a year ago that my life would be what it is today, I would have thought they were crazy. Two years ago today, I was attacked in my home during a home invasion. It was the most horrible thing I could ever have imagined. I lived in a nice home,…

This was a great week and a dreadful week, as things typically go in this stressful life we lead these days. I’ve learned over the years to take the good and the bad, but I am not always happy about it. But life is was it is. Tuesday was great. I went sailing with a…

My father was a man of few words. The one exception was shortly after I had left for Washington after spending a month with him after my mother passed away. Then, at least, daily, when long distance calls had gotten very cheap with Dime-line, 10 per minute, he would call me or my sister, Karen,…

Good morning from Santa Clara, CA. The sun is shining, the skies are blue and I am off on another busy day. I will be able to catch up on writing about my travels so far later tonight. Yesterday, I was able to visit with my debate coach from high school, Carmendale Fernandes, which was…
